Celebrating Mothers!

Celebrating Mothers!

Term 5 is a month of many celebrations at Star.  Last week, it was a treat to have our Grandparents and Special Friends visit the school.  This Friday morning, the Kindergarten and Primary class will celebrate ‘mothers’ (to be followed in June, celebrating ‘fathers’)!  Thank you for taking the time to support the Star community and being a part of events and activities like these.  Our next full school event is on Wednesday, May 28th, after school with a BBQ, student showcase, and fun! Please plan to attend this event between 4:30 – 6:00 p.m., an RSVP form will be sent out later this month.

Over the spring break week , I listened to a podcast with Shonda Rhimes, on ‘saying yes to what scares you’.  There were many terrific insights shared by Rhimes: her career, her stories, and her characters, which took me on a dive into learning more about her.  As a woman, with a legacy of strong women behind me, and the mother of a daughter, I loved hearing about the creation of the character of Christina Yang, “I wanted us to watch and admire a woman who did not want the things we have all been told we are supposed to want. I wanted us to befriend a woman who was busy throwing out the fairy tale and writing her own story.”

Needless to say, my next step was to pick up her book and dive in.  In honour of Mother’s Day, we should all, (not just moms), spend this week thinking of how to apply these two nuggets of wisdom from Year of Yes into our lives and those around us.

“This YES is about giving yourself the permission to shift the focus of what is a priority from what is good for you to what makes you feel good. Everyone has a different happy place, being with their best friend, their job, their family, a hobby, something.  Take time to go to the happy place.” (p.123)

“There is one rule. The rule is: there are no rules. Happiness comes from living as you need to, as you want to. As your inner voice tells you to. Happiness comes from being who you actually are instead of who you think you are supposed to be.” (p.286).

Spend the week celebrating all of the amazing women in your lives, and an early ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ to all!
